  1. In first attempt many fellows try to get 49% of 20 crore to derive to the answer which is wrong.It looks tricky

    Study the graph carefully and see that the percent is given from total urban population which and not the total population
    Same is the cases of Rural and total population.

    So if you have 20 crore in question and you try and 49% out of that you might end up selecting a wrong choice.

    The right way is:

    We need to find the population below poverty line for the year 1973-74
    Lets first find the total population during this period

    Let it be x

    So 54.9 lets take it 55 from graph

    (55/100)x=20 crore

    x=(20/0.55) crore
    x=36.36 crore = 37 crore

    So total population was 37 crore then

    Now let rural population was y crore then urban population was 37-y crore

    Rural population below poverty line during that time is 56.4%y=0.56y(rounded off percentage)

    Similarly urban population below poverty line is 0.49(37-y)

    20=0.56y+0.49(37-Y)

    Y=26.71 crore(total rural population)

    So rural population below poverty line during that period is 56.4% of 26.71 =15.06 crore
